In this article:
We look at chemical resistances of seals & gasket materials
We answer: What chemicals are FPM & EPDM seals resistant to?
What are the maximum working temperatures for EPDM & FPM seals?
Chemical Resistance Information for Seals & Gaskets Materials
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE OF EPDM & FPM SEALS AND GASKETS
THIS CHART SHOWS THE EXPECTED PERFORMANCE OF THE SEALS AND GASKET MATERIALS WHEN IN CONTACT WITH THE LISTED CHEMICALS
The first thing to be considered when selecting a seal compound is its resistance to ALL chemicals with which it will come in to contact, which may include gaseous products from combustion, lubricants and / or acids formed in service. The list below attempts to show general chemical resistance of the seal compounds used in our valves to the listed chemicals, it is not exhaustive and if there is doubt please contact us for further information.
E = Excellent | VG = Very Good | G = Good | R = Reasonable | N = Not recommended
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene) | FPM (Fluorocarbon elastomer) | |

Fire-proof Hyd. Fluids | VG | R - N |
Lubricating Oils | N | E |
Fuel Oils | N | E |
Hydraulic Oils | N | E |
Vegetable Oils | R | E |
Animal Fats | R | E |
Petrol (Normal) | N | E |
Petrol (High Octane) | N | E |

This chart shows the expected performance of the seals & gasket materials in our valves when used to convey the listed chemicals. This information is provided as a preliminary guide and does not constitute actual advice. There are other factors that need to be taken into account asides from chemical resistance when choosing seal compounds and the customer should always satisfy themselves as to the suitability of material for each and every application.
Summary:
• FPM & EPDM seals have different chemical resistance profiles and this should be the first thing to be considered when choosing seal compounds.
• All chemicals in which the seal will come into contact needs to be considered when choosing a seal compound for any application.
• Other seal compound properties need to be considered with each individual application.
